FAQs

Dermaplaning is a completely non-invasive way to achieve healthy and vibrant skin. It works by removing the layer of dead cells on the surface of your skin and peach fuzz to reveal your beautiful complexion underneath.

Dermaplaning is a facial procedure performed by the experienced practitioners that enhances the skin’s youthful appearance by scraping away the surface layers of skin and peach fuzz.  A scalpel is used to lightly remove the epidermis, as well as any hair on the face. The scalpel is scraped across the skin in light strokes, leaving behind a soft, clean, and supple layer of skin. Topical pure hyaluronic acid or Obagi vitamin c serum are applied afterwards.

At Contemporary Health Center, we routinely use dermaplaning to help our clients achieve better looking skin!

A dermaplaning facial is a painless and non irritating skin care treatment that provides an effective and safe exfoliation.

Its benefits include:

  • Removal of facial hair (peach fuzz) and dead skin cells that can trap dirt and oils that may cause bacterial infections
  • Manual facial exfoliation technique uses gentle process versus aggressive techniques
  • Removes surface debris
  • Improves skin texture
  • Removes fluffy vellus facial hair
  • Remove unwanted facial, neck or scalp hair
  • Reduces the appearance of enlarged pores
  • Generates new healthy cells
  • Address uneven skin pigmentation
  • Achieve smoother skin texture
  • Instant skin brightening effect
  • Increase in blood circulation, which in turn helps you to achieve healthy and glowing skin
  • Primes skin for chemical peel or laser treatment
  • Better absorption and deeper product penetration, boosting the effects of skin care products while making the skin look and feel smoother
  • Reduces the appearance of blemishes, acne scars and hyperpigmentation
  • Allows for flawless makeup application
  • Unclogs pores by drawing out blackheads and whiteheads
  • Heals ingrown hairs by removing dead skin to allow the hair to break through the skin
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • It’s a little to no down time skin care treatment

Dermaplaning can either be applied locally to specific areas of skin or to the whole face.

Face, neck, and scalp are most popular areas.

When performed just before a chemical peel, Dermaplaning can allow a chemical peel to achieve even better results because the peel can be applied more evenly to the skin. Because the external layer of skin has been removed, any treatment used afterward will be able to penetrate the skin more effectively. The results of these peels also prove to be more effective when paired with this treatment.

Dermaplaning can also be combined with other treatments, including Chemical Peels, IPL, laser rejuvenation, microneedling, Vampire Facial
Pretreating with dermaplaning allows the chemical peel, light energy, microneedling, PRP or laser to penetrate more effectively.

Dermaplane Facial Treatment

Dermaplaning can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or as part of a facial treatment. Our medical providers recommend you get dermaplaning as part of a renewal facial for optimal results. Below, are the steps of a dermaplaning facial at Contemporary Health Center:.

  1. Skin analysis and cleansing

First, the provider examines your skin under a bright, magnifying lamp for any skin conditions (acne, blackheads, whiteheads, aging, sun-damage, dehydration, etc). Also, to determine your skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal). With the appropriate products for your skin, we gently and thoroughly double cleanses your skin.

  1. Exfoliation

Instead of using a chemical exfoliant or scrub, we use a small, #10 sterile surgical blade to exfoliate your skin, remove dead skin cells, peach fuzz and unclog your pores.

This is done by holding the skin taut, using the sterile surgical blade, at 45-degree angle, and swiping the blade in gentle upward motions to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz.

  1. Extractions

The next step is extraction. Extraction is optional and performed as needed. This is the removal of blackheads or whiteheads.

  1. Facial Massage

A facial massage is then performed using massage techniques such as effleurage (massage with circular stroking movements) to both relax you and stimulate circulation.

  1. Facial Peel

An appropriate peel solution for your skin type and condition is applied. A facial peel is an excellent way to remove excess oils, pull out impurities and help hydrate your skin and improve the appearance of your pores.

  1. Final Application

In this last stage, we apply medical grade toner, serums, moisturizer and sunscreen to your skin.

Dermaplaning, unlike laser hair removal, is not a permanent hair removal procedure. That’s the reason we suggest that patients come in for a dermaplaning procedure every four to six weeks to keep up with the body’s natural hair growth cycle. For a more long-term solution, we offer laser hair removal options.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A DERMAPLANE FACIAL

PRE-TREATMENT:

Please discontinue products containing any exfoliating agents (such as retinoic acid, tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, astringents, etc.) 24-48 hours before treatment.

A history of herpes or cold sores may require a course of anti-viral medication pre and post treatment.

Your medical provider will recommend appropriate products to help enhance results and/or minimize potential side effects. Use them as directed.

Patients who have had dermaplaning facial treatment claim that the texture of their skin changed dramatically before and after, as the skin is left rid of all of the dry skin and the dirt and oil trapped underneath. The recovery process is also a selling point with customers, as there are little to no adverse effects from the facial treatment alone. Some peeling is normal, but can be soothed with a moisturizing face cream.

DERMAPLANING FACIAL AFTER CARE

POST TREATMENT:

You may experience slight redness and swelling, which should resolve within 24 hours.

You can wear make-up immediately after treatment.

Avoid heat, saunas, hot tubs and sweaty activity, including exercise, for 24 hours.

Avoid products containing any exfoliating agents (retinoic acid, retinol, tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, astringents, etc.) for 24 hours after treatment.

Resume your regular skin care routine 24 hours after treatment.

IS THERE DOWNTIME AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM DERMAPLANING?

No, there is absolutely no recovery or down time with this treatment. Dermaplaning is a quick, painless, non irritating, exfoliating procedure that normally takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

Dermaplaning offers a mild exfoliation and therefore requires no recovery time. Puffiness and redness are to be expected immediately after treatment, but go down quickly. Because the skin does not go through trauma with this procedure, it can be repeated several times throughout the year.

You may resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure.

Yes. You may apply makeup, preferably mineral makeup, right away!

Yes. Resume your regular skin care routine 24 hours after treatment

Our medical providers recommend you space dermaplaning treatments approximately 3-4 weeks apart for the best results. If you wait longer between treatments, you may notice that your skin is not as smooth as it was after dermaplaning treatments.

This procedure can be done every three to six weeks to maintain the results. Treating the skin in this manner actually removes about two to three weeks’ worth of dead skin cells. You should allow your skin to complete its normal skin cycle of approximately 21 to 30 days before repeating the treatment.

The cost of a DermaplaningFacial can vary depending on whether it is combined with other treatments or not. On average, prices range from med spa to med spa, depending on the services received. Contemporary Health Center is the best place to get a Dermaplaning Facial.

Our price is $125 for 1 treatment, $300 for 3 treatments, and $75 when combined at the same time as a chemical peel, IPL, or laser treatment.

Do you suffer from fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, blemishes, clogged pores, acne prone skin, or dull skin? Would you like to achieve healthy, glowing, radiant and hydrated skin? Do you want skin that absorbs skin products well? Dermaplaning may be the answer for you. In this post, we go into detail of what, how and when dermaplaning is recommended. We answer all your questions relating to a dermaplaning facial.

Yes, dermaplaning is safe for most patients of any age and does not interfere with most health condition, when performed by an experienced practitioner.

There are many safe, chemical free, non invasive, and natural benefits to getting a dermaplaning facial.  Nursing or pregnant cannot get acid peel facials, for fear that the chemicals could enter the bloodstream and negatively affect the child or fetus. For these women, dermaplaning treatment is and ideal option for deeply exfoliating their skin. Additionally, patients with excessive peach fuzz hair on their face are likely to pick dermaplaning as a way to remove the hair.

Men and women of any age are candidates. Especially those with dull skin, peach fuzz that won’t respond to laser hair removal, wrinkles, or those having a chemical peel or laser/IPL treatment.

While most of our clients rarely experience any side effects, the most common side effects of dermaplaning are:

You may feel a scratching sensation which is uncomfortable but not painful

After a dermaplaning facial, your skin may appear as slightly pink or red in color (flushed). This will disappear in a few hours or a day

Very aggressive treatment may cause mild flaking of the skin that will last for one week

We have experienced medical providers who perform dermaplaning facials. They will handle your skin with care to minimize any side effects and get your skin renewed and glowing in little to no time!

While you can shave your face using a regular razor, you will not get the same results as you would if you used a proper dermaplaning tool-a sharp, sterile, single blade.

Shaving removes the hair. But, it does not exfoliate and remove nearly as much amount of dead skin and peach fuzz as dermaplaning, dermabrasion or waxing would do. Also, shaving blunts the end of the hair, which leads to ingrown hair. Furthermore, blunt edges of hair have a stubbly and coarse feel when hair grows back.

Dermaplaning will not cause breakouts. Like most exfoliation techniques, dermaplaning prevents breakouts rather than causing them.It unclogs pores and removes dead skin cells resulting in fewer to no breakouts.

Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types. However, if you have deep cystic acne, or active acne pustules, wait until breakouts are clear before trying dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning cannot be performed on skin with active acne, a Dermaplaningfacial will prevent clogged pores and pimples from forming. It unclogs pores and removes dead skin cells, resulting in fewer to no breakouts.

While dermaplaning can’t be performed on skin with active pustules of acne, it will unclog pores, remove blackheads and whiteheads, and prevent clogged pores and pimples from forming. By removing the top layer of dead skin cells, dermaplaning prevents these cells from getting trapped inside your pores resulting in fewer breakouts.

The process of dermaplaning can reduce fine lines, acne, scars, and wrinkles, and even out the skin’s texture by removing dead cells and hair that trap oils and bacteria. New, healthy skin is stimulated and the result is smoother, brighter skin.

Hair, or peach fuzz, can trap oils and dirt on the skin, causing it to look discolored and perpetually shiny. This dirt cannot be lifted with an exfoliating soap from the drug store, so it can cause great frustration for many. When this hair is removed, the skin is left looking fresh and healthy.

As a result of dermaplaning, you will see vellus facial hair, also called “peach fuzz,” disappear along with the extra buildup of oil and dirt that the hair attracts. Another benefit of removing this hair is that it allows makeup to go on smoother and more evenly. Your face will glow and other facial treatments you receive will be more effective. This procedure can even be performed monthly if you wish.

A common myth is that the more hair is shaved, the darker and thicker it will grow back. This is not true! The hair will grow at the same rate and no darker or thicker than before.

Many of us are told that our hair grow will grow back thicker once shaven or removed. This is a myth. It is physiologically impossible for your hair to thicken from shaving or removing.

Your hair will grow back exactly the same color and thickness as it was prior to a dermaplane facial. Because you are removing the dead layer of skin and vellus hair during a dermaplane facial, your skin will be much brighter than you’ve experienced in the past. As a result, your hair will appear darker/thicker.

Everyone is different. Some people genetically, hormonally, or naturally have slightly thicker and darker vellus hair that may be more noticeable compared to others.
